What is Sleep Calculator?
The Sleep Calculator counts backward or forward in 90-minute sleep cycles (encompassing Light Sleep, Deep Slow-Wave Sleep, and REM sleep) so you awaken at the end of a cycle feeling alert rather than during deep sleep.
How to Use This Calculator
- Select whether you want to calculate a wake time or bedtime.
- Enter your target time and AM/PM.
- Adjust sleep latency (time required to fall asleep).
- Choose a bedtime aligned with 5 or 6 complete sleep cycles.
The Mathematical Formula & Variables
Step-by-Step Worked Example
Scenario: Waking up at 7:00 AM with 15 minutes to fall asleep.
- 5 cycles = 5 * 90 min = 450 minutes = 7.5 hours.
- 7:00 AM minus 7.5 hours = 11:30 PM.
- Subtract 15 minutes latency = 11:15 PM bedtime.
- 6 cycles = 6 * 90 min = 540 minutes = 9.0 hours. 7:00 AM minus 9 hrs 15 min = 9:45 PM.
Result: Bedtime: 9:45 PM (9 hrs) or 11:15 PM (7.5 hrs)
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do 90-minute sleep cycles matter?
Waking up mid-cycle during slow-wave Stage 3 deep sleep triggers sleep inertia, leaving you feeling groggy, disoriented, and fatigued for hours.
